With “70437 WOYZECK”, the Citizen.KANE.Kollektiv is developing a performative city walk with audio drama elements in Stuttgart-Freiberg. Marie and Franz—the main characters from Georg Büchner’s drama fragment “Woyzeck”—are people on the margins of society: unable to communicate, controlled by others, poor, observed, and under social pressure.
The performance translates their story into the district. Between apartment blocks, green spaces and everyday routes, what Büchner addressed 190 years ago becomes visible: social inequality and violence against women. As a performative audio walk, “70437 WOYZECK” leads to places where solidarity is lived: social institutions, shopping centres, neighbourhood cafés, church institutions, as well as clubs and initiatives. Over the course of the walk, they are introduced and their important work is brought into focus.
The district walk does not turn the figures from “Woyzeck” into figures of the past, but into a perspective on the present: When does patriarchal possessiveness turn into violence? Will men ever take responsibility? In “70437 WOYZECK”, the audience walks through real streets—and at the same time through a web of voices, their own observations and gazes. An invitation to (re)discover Stuttgart-Freiberg! Carina S. Clay
